La peur is a sculpture by artist Gilles Mihalcean. It is made from multiple materials: galvanized steel, aluminum, limestone, granite, sandstone, marble and epoxy paint. It is nearly 3 metres tall!
The materials in La peur are manufactured, processed or raw, reflecting different stages in the evolution of civilization. Pebbles and blocks form rock strata, representing the most ancient epochs. The cross, the ultimate symbol of Christianity, recalls the active role of religion in Quebec’s history; geographically speaking, it is also a human-scale echo of the cross on Mount Royal. Its unusual shape evokes an artificial satellite orbiting the planet. The finger, inserted in a disc transformed into a shield, is intended as a metaphor for fear.
